FAMILY AND PROFESSION
Ron Derenzi was born in San Francisco on August 22, 1941. His father Angelo was also born here, after his family immigrated to the City in 1906 from the Calabrese village of Verbicaro, Italia. His mother’s family, the Bollentinis, emigrated from the Ligurian village of Borghetto Vara in 1905 and settled in Colma, where his mother Norma was born. Ron has an identical twin brother, Robert.
Ron is a proud graduate of Balboa High School and San Jose State University, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and Finance in 1964. After graduating from college, Ron enlisted in the United States Navy. He was part of the Active Reserves from 1964 to 1970, achieving the enlisted rate of 2nd Class Petty Officer as a Photo Intelligence Analyst.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Ron entered the banking profession as a retail banker, a profession he loved for 42 years. Always in management, Ron held a Branch Manager position for 27 years and a Regional Banking position for 11 years, retiring from Bank of the West in January, 2007.
Ron met his sweetheart Marie in college in 1962. They graduated together from San Jose State in 1964 and just celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary this year. They have two married daughters and three granddaughters, and have resided in South San Francisco for over forty-six years.
Like his parents before him, Ron has been active as a volunteer in countless organizations over the past 40 years. In the 1980s, Ron was President of the North Beach Merchant’s Association and Lion’s Club. He is Past President of the Menlo Park Chamber of Commerce, and in 2001 was awarded the Chamber’s Golden Acorn Award and the Gary T. Williams Award. He has served his parish, St. Veronica’s in South San Francisco, as an Extra-Ordinary Minister of Communion for over 40 years, as well as serving as the Chair of the Parish and School Finance Committees for over10 years.
Ron and Marie are active in the Alta Loma Middle School PTA and the El Camino High School PTSA in South San Francisco. Ron is treasurer of the high school PTSA, auditor of the middle school, and financial secretary and parliamentarian of the SSFPTA Council. He is also currently serving on the President’s Council at Skyline College in San Bruno.
Since 1985 Ron has been involved in the San Francisco Columbus Day Celebration Committee; he is a Past President and is currently its treasurer. He is also on the Board of the Italian Community Services organization in San Francisco.
Ron joined Il Cenacolo in 1978, sponsored by Rinaldo Carmazzi. His sons-in-law, Jim Guglielmoni and Damon Tarver, are also members of Il Cenacolo. During those early years, Ron had the honor and pleasure of knowing some of our early members: Sal Reina; Renzo Turco; Julian Pardini, Sr.; Fred Campagnoli; Roger Ranuio; Lou Alessandra; and Ercole Caroselli, to name a few. He is also proud to have met opera singer Luciano Pavarotti, and Maestri Kurt Herbert Adler and Lotfi Monsouri under the auspices of the club.
Ron was elected President of Il Cenacolo in 1989 and thoroughly enjoyed his time at this post. Since then, he has been co-chair of the Opera Outing and Holiday Dinner for several years, and is currently Membership Chair.
Ron’s tireless service to the Italian community and the community at large, delivered with ebullience and no thought of thanks, and his wholehearted dedication to the club, have earned him the respect of friends and colleagues alike. Il Cenacolo is delighted to name Ron Derenzi as our 2013 Man of the Year.
