Il Cenacolo is a supporter of the two main training programs for young artists at the San Francisco Opera. These are the Merola Program and the Adler Fellows. These two programs are among the most prestigious in the world. Merola receives more than 900 applications each year and only selects 24 artists. The Merolini gather for an entire summer of intensive training in voice, acting and language.

Each year, four or five of the Merola graduates are selected to continue training as an Adler Fellow, named after the late Kurt Herbert Adler, a great General Director of the Opera, and member of Il Cenacolo. This training continues for two more years and usually includes performance roles on the main stage during the upcoming seasons.

Il Cenacolo has enjoyed a close relationship with these programs and been a financial supporter of both since 1968.

The founders of Il Cenacolo were drawn together by a common love of Italian language and culture, especially opera.

The history  of Il Cenacolo has been interwoven with that of the  San Francisco Opera from the very beginning. Both organizations came into existence at about the same time. In the 1970’s Il Cenacolo began to support for the two premier training programs of the San Francisco Opera, The Adler Fellows and Merola.
